Angela Lema, Will Jones, and Andrea Haitz were sworn in during a ceremony Tuesday night in the Harry Butler board room in front of a packed room full of parents, community members, and their families.
Andrea Haitz was nominated for board president, which was seconded by Will Jones, and then she was selected by 3-2 vote for the position. Will Jones was nominated and selected for vice president.
There was some confusion and tension in the room during the discussion about whether the secretary would be a board member or a staff member. After discussion with legal counsel, all five members voted “yes” to selecting board member Angela Lema as the secretary. The assistant secretary position went to former secretary Bridget Story. Other committee positions were put off to be selected at a later date.
Discussion also happened about the board’s open coffee meetings and whether they should be held at different locations around town for easier access. The meeting on December 18th will stay at Colorado Mesa University. The one in January will be held in Palisade.
This represents an almost complete flip of power in the school board from the previous members and president that were all funded by the local teachers union (MVEA) to the new members that billed themselves as a conservative board and won the election earlier this month.
